Launch of Deutsch Drahthaar UK

Posted November 15th, 2006 |

Today (15th November 2006) sees the launch of a new web-blog, Deutsch Drahthaar UK www.drahthaar.co.uk. This site has been created to bring together all the Deutsch Drahthaar owners and enthusiasts in the UK into a community that can discuss everything to do with this versatile gundog.

The site includes articles and photo galleries about the breed, the German hunt test system and answers many of the specific requests for information relating to importing German dogs and running in German field competitions for this breed.

Deutsch Drahthaar Site

The site should be of particular interest to deer stalkers, wildfowlers and rough shooters as the versatile nature of the dog and the German hunt test regimes favour the more personal forms of hunting of wild game, both large and small. High value is placed on body scent and blood tracking capabilities and retrieving of all forms of game with minimal intervention of the handler.

Links are maintained to the official VDD affiliated Deutsch Drahthaar groups around the world.

The site has been launched by Peter and Maxine McCullough, are the UK’s leading breeder of true dual purpose German Wirehaired Pointers (their affix is KIMMAX), breeding quality working dogs for over 15 years and have been members of the Verein Deutsch Drahthaar (the German breed club) for 5 years.

Their passion for this breed and its versatility as a hunting dog is such that they are about to import their 4th Deutsch Drahthaar to the UK to continue the injection of the best bloodlines available in Europe.

The new website will be populated with articles, not just from Peter and Maxine, but from invited contributors who can add value to the group in writing about aspects of working, training or competing in field competitions with their Drahthaar.

About Peter and Maxine McCullough

Maxine McCullough has owned, worked and trained German Wirehaired Pointers in the UK, under the Kimmax affix, for 15 years. She was the first GWP kennels to import a dog under the Balai directive, the precursor to the Pet Passport scheme. This dutch dog, Isaac went on to become a show champion.

Her next import from Holland was an outstanding working dog, Maestro, who has had great success in field competitions (he has won numerous Open Working Tests) and is the father of numerous field trial award winners, in particular, Joker (Ch Just Joking for Kimmax) who to date has had 7 field trial awards, winning 4 of them (including a 1st in Novice and 2nd in All Aged).

Peter McCullough has owned, trained and worked HPR breeds since 1980. His first dog was a Large Munsterlander before buying his first GWP, Willow, in 1996 from Maxine. Willow was an instant success, gaining field trail awards, winning Open working tests, Best GWP Bitch at Crufts in 1999 and then gaining her full champion title (show champion with field trial awards) to prove her versatility.

A keen field trialler, Peter has had numerous awards including 4 awards and winning a Novice trial with his dog, Kasey (Kimmax Kareful Kid) who is a son of the great Mirko Vom Bockenhagen.

Peter has also spent a great deal of time learning on the German hunt system and their training methods. He has become the only person in the UK ever to have successfully competed in the Internationale Hegewald, the Deutsch Drahthaar’s most prestigious field test for young dogs, organised by the Verein Deutsch Drahthaar, which he has now done twice - coming 27th out of 203 dogs.

Clyde and Buffy are doing well. Clyde is much more confident now but still hates bangs, sticks and hosepipes. Vet said both are in extremely good condition! My stepson has a rescued GWP bitch too from the Abersoch area and she turns out to go back to of your lines originally. We are living near Crewe most of the time until we sell our house in Anglesey. Then we hope to go to the NW Highlands. Best wishes to you both.
